April 2016: Honoring Jennifer Winnie

by Tammy Keith, Supervisor, Learning Together Parents as Teachers Program

Great Start Columbus in Muscogee County has been busy!  This Great Start Georgia site is expanding their home visiting programs, training new staff, and recognizing Jennifer Winnie as she celebrates her 10th anniversary as a certified Parent Educator.

Engage in even a short conversation with Jennifer and you will quickly feel her passion and sincerity when she talks about her career choice. Jennifer recognizes the need for home visitation and recalls, “I wish someone would have come to my house.” As a young adult she discovered her passion and zeal for working with children and decided that early childhood education would be an area in which she could advocate and make that wish come true for another child.

Jennifer believes that all families should have the resources needed to thrive and function. Being reared in a bi-cultural and military family has allowed her to more readily identify with community needs, adapt to the changes involved with transitions and face the challenges of having one parent who is foreign born.  Jennifer sees that connections to community are vital and the ability to see families from where they are positioned enables her to build strengths, link families to resources and help plan goals toward self-sufficiency. She will tell you, “the enjoyment in problem-solving is knowing that nothing is too hard once it is recognized.”

Jennifer has worked in her community for the past ten years and has helped families find belonging in their local Parents as Teachers Program.  She currently acts as a Lead Parent Educator for the Learning Together Parents as Teachers Program and is providing guidance, mentorship and motivation to new staff.  We celebrate her work as an advocate for children and we are glad that she is visiting families at homes in Muscogee County.

Congratulations, Jennifer!
